Lore Primer

A VokunRP common-knowledge guide: what most believable characters should know before their first scene.

Think of this page as a boundary for immersion, not a spoiler sheet. If your character has lived in Skyrim for a while, this is the sort of information they could have picked up from taverns, roads, barracks, shrines, and local rumor.

If your character is newly arrived, isolated, poorly educated, or from far outside the province, scale this down accordingly.

Province and Law

  • Skyrim is divided into nine holds with recognizable centers of power.
  • Day-to-day authority is understood through Jarls, courts, and hold law.
  • Common crimes such as theft, murder, and open banditry are broadly understood and punished.
  • Most people know Skyrim exists under Imperial influence and that Thalmor politics remain a source of tension.

Well-Known Factions

  • Companions: Famous as warriors with deep historical prestige, especially in Whiterun.
  • Thieves Guild: Publicly a rumor, commonly associated with Riften, rarely acknowledged openly.
  • Dark Brotherhood: A feared name in stories, but uncertain enough that many dismiss it as hearsay.
  • Dawnguard: Known as vampire hunters; sightings and rumors of their patrols spread quickly.
  • College of Winterhold: Distrusted by many locals, respected by those who study magic.
  • Volkihar Vampires: Not general public knowledge.

The Dragonborn Era

  • Older characters may remember the Civil War and dragon crisis years.
  • Helgen’s destruction and the return of dragons are widely recognized anchor events in living memory.
  • The Last Dragonborn’s true identity and later whereabouts are unknown.
  • If a tale is not clearly tied to major world-saving events, assume it is rumor, embellishment, or local myth unless your RP earned certainty.

Daedric Knowledge

  • Most characters may know Daedric names and broad spheres, but not specialist theology.
  • Specific shrine locations, artifact truths, and ritual practice are not common knowledge unless your character has earned that expertise.
  • Azura's monument is a known exception. Ithela is unknown, even in most academic and occult circles.
